2011-12 NHS Concert Season
- Thursday, October 20th, 7pm. Fall Bands Concert. Start the 2011-12 concert season with the newly-split Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band at the NHS Auditorium, with Chicago-based guest trumpet artist Christopher O’Hara! Our two wind bands tackle classics (Gustav Holst’s First Suite) and new works alike (R. Christopher Teichler’s Ballad) in the first performance of our new, leveled band program.
- Thursday, October 27th, 7pm. Fall Choral/Jazz Concert. The NHS Chorus, under the direction of Amy Cortright, and the Jazz Ensemble kick off their concert season with a range of pieces from the classic to the contemporary.
- Thursday, December 8th, 7pm. Winter Bands Concert. The bands return to the stage for some winter excitement, featuring transcriptions of orchestral works by Antonin Dvorak, Edward Elgar and Arthur Sullivan, as well as original wind compositions by Derek Bourgeois, John Barnes Chance and more!
- Thursday, December 15th, 7pm. Winter Choral/Jazz Concert. The NHS Chorus brings its characteristic holiday cheer, while the Jazz Ensemble takes up the works of Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie.
- Thursday, February 9th and 16th, 7pm. Small Ensemble Nights. The students of the NHS Music program host a pair of evenings of chamber vocal and instrumental music, solo work and combo jazz, as part of our innovative and adventurous chamber music program. , With guidance from their directors, students select their own repertoire and lead their own rehearsals–the results always surprise and delight!
- Tuesday, April 24th, 7pm. Spring Bands Concert. The bands close out the main portion of their 2011-12 concert season and recognize their graduating seniors. The Wind Ensemble heads overseas, with performances of Grainger’s Children’s March and Milhaud’s Suite Francaise, and the Symphonic Band takes a step into the avant-garde with a performance of Colgrass’ Old Churches and bookends the year with the final movement of Holst’s Second Suite.
- Thursday, May 3rd, 7pm. Spring Choral/Jazz Concert. The chorus and jazz ensembles close the 2011-12 NHS concert season and recognize their graduating seniors.
