Music Theory students at NHS recently took the newest version of industry standard composition software Sibelius 6 out for a test drive, cobbling together transcriptions of the opening of a Beethoven String Quartet in C minor.

Sibelius helps users to craft their own complete musical scores from scratch, allowing the composer to specify literally every last detail–instrumentation, meter, tempo, articulation, style and much more.  It also provides instant playback of scores in surprisingly advanced MIDI format, cleans up and standardizes formatting and creates individual performers’ parts on its own.

Sibelius has been used to score blockbuster films like The Bourne Ultimatum, Happy Feet,Casino Royale and The Lord of the Rings, among many others, and is most recently being used by composer George S. Clinton and his copyists for the upcoming video game release Assassin’s Creed II.

Thank you, Music Appreciants, for going 19 for 19 in bringing in your drafts on time!  Thank you additionally for the solid job you did today on peer review.

Regarding final drafts:

  • They are due in class on Thursday, September 17th.
  • They are being assessed according to the three Focus Correction Areas identified on your assignment sheet:  At least one answer to each of the Big Four Questions numbered (5 each, total of 20 points), a clear statement of position that is underlined (5 points),  and all album titles in italics and song titles in quotation marks (5 points).
  • Remember to read them aloud to yourself in order to spot errors (and then, please, correct those errors!) before you turn them in.

Percussion instrument (and kitchen supply–I just received this as a wedding gift from another band director!) maker Vic Firth, Inc. has one of the best educational websites on the internet, chock full of instructional resources for percussionists looking to beef up their concert, keyboard, marching or drum set chops.  I’m adding it to the links menu on the right, and highly encourage students to check it out!

Many thanks to Dean Inouye, online editor of the Boston Globe South, who was kind enough to ring me up to talk (of all things) about our website.  He did a fantastic job with the writeup, and I’m very appreciative of the attention that he and the Globe South give to local schools, events and programs.  Here’s the link!
