Band Staff 2008-09 Elections May 28, 2008

Three points of interest before listing the candidates:

  1. Candidates are required to submit their speeches by Monday, June 2nd. If you do not submit by that date, you can still run, you’ll just have to speak impromptu.
  2. Speeches and voting will occur in class on Tuesday, June 3rd.
  3. Remember when voting that you are voting for the candidates who will best be able to execute the offices for which they are running. This isn’t a popularity contest, it’s a series of decisions regarding who would best be suited to help with the day to day functioning of the music department, broaden and improve the department’s public visibility, plan and run fundraisers and much more. Your band staff should be made up of people who above all else are responsible, hardworking, creative, diligent and reliable. Think through your choices carefully and choose wisely!

And now…your candidates!

Many, many thanks to all of the students who participated in the Memorial Day Parade!  Your efforts and professionalism were much appreciated and say a lot about how much we’ve grown as an ensemble over the course of the school year.  Pictures to come!

Memorial Day Parade Reminders May 24, 2008

Here are the details for Monday:

  1. Meet at the corner of Lincoln and Main at 9:45am. Official forming up goes from 10:00-10:30, at which point the parade begins.
  2. Wear a plain white shirt, khaki shorts and confortable marching sneakers. No collar is required on the shirt, and it can be short- or long-sleeved, but make sure it’s plain, with no logos.  You can wear shorts or pants, but because of the likely temperature, I’d recommend shorts.  Wear sneakers that will help you roll step while marching–any sneakers will do, but running or walking shoes are best.  Try not to wear shoes that are incredibly bulky.
  3. Bring your instrument, flip folder (with music) and lyre. Kari or I will transport the flip folders and lyres while you march to the green for the actual ceremony.
  4. After the ceremony on the green in Norwell Center, you’re free to enjoy the rest of the day!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me!  Any changes in plan as a result of weather will be posted here, by me.  See you on Monday!

-Mr. O’Briant

Update: I picked up the last remaining snare drum and bass, as well as mallets and sticks for both, from the school earlier today (Saturday), since they were left at the school Friday evening.

Update 2: As of 8:15 on Sunday morning, the weather still looks good.  See you at 9:45!

We’re very proud to announce that junior Caroline Cronin, from the NHS Chorus, has been selected by the Boston Pops as one of 20 semifinalists in their High School Sing-Off.  Students from across the state were invited to submit audition videos of their performances of works from the musical theatre repertoire, and based on the strength of her audition, Caroline was selected as part of the top 20 participants.

She now advances to the live performance portion of the audition process, which will take place in Symphony Hall as part of four concerts in the month of June along with the entire Boston Pops orchestra.  The eventual winner will perform with the orchestra on the Esplanade at the Pops’ Fourth of July concert.

We’re very proud of Caroline and have always been impressed by her passion and dedication to her craft and her unfailing humility as a performer.  We wish her the best of luck in the semi-finals!

Caroline’s bio and photo, courtesy of the BSO website (http://www.bso.org/bso/mods/bios_detail.jsp?id=31300083):

Caroline Cronin is a junior at Norwell High School where she is active in drama, chorus, the school newspaper and Best Buddies. She is also involved with The Company Theatre in Norwell participating in the theatre’s Teen Conservatory Program.

Favorite roles in past productions include Cassie in A Chorus Line and Eleanor/Bizarbara in Starmites.

She recently won acting awards for her role as Felicity in “The Real Inspector Hound” which was performed by Norwell High School this year in the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild Festival and placed second in the 2007 National Association of Teachers’ of Singing Song Festival.

When relaxing, Caroline enjoys spending time with family and friends, writing, listening to music, playing the piano and with her dog. Caroline has a supportive younger brother who is her biggest fan. Her plans after high school include college and pursuing a career in musical theater. She is ecstatic to be participating in this amazing competition!

I wanted to take a minute to thank the wonderful young people both at the First Parish Preschool and at the Vinal School here at Norwell for helping us have a fun and exciting time playing music.  We recently received some thanks from the students themselves, and I thought it’d be cool to post them here:From the First Parish Preschool

We’re looking forward to coming back soon!

Many thanks to Connor MacDonald, who took some fantastic new photos during rehearsals leading up to the Spring Concert this past week.  Hopefully in the not-too-distant future we’ll have some photos of the chorus to put up as well!
