Recently, members of the Jazz Workshop had the privilege of performing at the Norwell Women’s Club’s Fashion Show fundraiser at the Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston, MA. People have asked for a couple of photos from the show, so here they are (click for larger)!

Thanks again to the Women’s Club of Norwell for involving us in their important work.

Notes on April Break and The Week Thereafter April 17, 2008

The music department is facing a significant (though not insurmountable) challenge in holding its final concert the Thursday night (May 1) after April break. With that in mind, there are several things Amy and I thought would be important to mention:

  1. Students are fully expected to bring their instruments/music home to continue to prepare themselves for the performance over the break. I will be keeping a record of any band students who have failed to bring their instruments and/or music home to practice over the break; failure to do so will be reflected in the student’s grade for the fourth quarter. We’re in a position where we need to hit the ground running after break, something that will be impossible if students are not continually practicing.
  2. Both the Symphonic Band and the Chorus will be having night rehearsals on Wednesday, April 30th (the night before the performance).  The Chorus rehearsal will be from 5:30-7:30, and the band rehearsal will be from 7:00 until we’re done. This rehearsal was announced in class on or before Tuesday, April 15th. All students are required to attend. As this is an academic class activity, excusals will be permitted (extremely sparingly) at the sole discretion of each ensemble’s director, and unexcused absences will also be reflected in the student’s participation grade.

We’re excited about this final concert of our season, and are looking forward to diving into the final stretch!

Friday, April 18th, the NHS Symphonic Band will be traveling over to the Vinal School to perform a program on Storytelling in Music for the young people, many of whom will someday be sitting in these seats and performing with us!  We’re excited to have the opportunity to connect with our younger Norwellians, and our short concert will feature interaction between the elementary and high school students as well as the following pieces:

  • Peter and the Wolf, Sergei Prokofiev (arr. Curnow). Asst. Principal Mike Devine, narrator.
  • Sleep, Eric Whitacre.
  • Song of the Blacksmith from First Suite in Eb for Military Band, Gustav Holst.
  • Tear the Roof off the Sucker, George Clinton (arr. Wallace).

We’re looking forward to meeting all of our young students!
