We have a blog–I repeat, we have a blog. January 19, 2007

As of today, this is the official internet home of the Norwell High School Music Department. As this space develops, I hope that it will become home to most of the day-to-day information relevant to the operation of the Music Department–announcements, discussion topics, recordings, our handbook and many other important items. Expect to see this webpage evolve significantly over the next weeks and months as we flesh out what we’d like it to do and how best to accomplish those goals!

Primarily, I hope this becomes an interactive space where you can come not only for information but to participate in discussions central to the art of music in general and specifically NHS’ Music Department. For the foreseeable future, however, all comments will be subject to moderation before appearing adjacent to blog posts, so don’t panic if you try to leave a comment and it doesn’t appear until the following day.

Welcome all, then, and cheers!

-Mr. O’Briant

Thanks Mr. O’Briant for spending the time to develop this site. I enjoyed going through it and checking your links. Especially enjoyed the pics from Districts which I would otherwise have totally missed.
I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Jazz Lab the other night. I was quite impressed that these kids have a real sense of what jazz is about. It was a thrill to see them improvise. The little auditorium had a nice feel and I look forward to attending more such events there. It’s hard to believe that some of the boys (where are the girls?) had never played jazz before starting with you in September. That is an amazing accomplishment in just a few short weeks. Well done all around and, let’s have some more!

Thank you for your kindness! Re: “where are the girls?”:

I was struck by that when I got here as well, although we’re not unique in having that problem. For some reason, in most places I’ve either studied or taught, there has been a smaller female presence in the jazz program than in other areas of study. There are some very good female role models in jazz–instrumentalists as well as vocalists, although the vocalists are by far more well known (Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, to name just a few). I’m looking for more ways to draw girls into the jazz program, though, and I hope when we broaden its scope a bit next year that we’ll be able to. -JTO
